Today I enjoyed a day out in the glorious British countryside, photographing the winners of the annual Historic Houses Association Garden of Year.

This year’s award, sponsored by the internationally renowned auction house Christies, was presented to the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens in Dorset, once described by Alan Tichmarsh as one of the finest gardens he had ever visited.

The beautiful gardens and stunning scenery of the Dorset coast provided a pleasant change from my normal city shoots. The staff were all delighted to be rewarded for their work on the gardens which made for some happy photos – greatly helped by the sunny weather.

The presentation culminated with a celebratory luncheon, hosted by James and Charlotte Townshend at Melbury House, one of the most impressive and attractive country houses I have ever seen.
